(A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide from The Cactus Cowboys)
So you just received your Cactus Cowboys mushroom grow bag — congrats! You’re about to grow your very own gourmet mushrooms right from home. Whether it’s Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Pink Oyster, or Shiitake, each Cactus Cowboys All-In-One Grow Bag is designed to make mushroom cultivation simple, fun, and foolproof — no special equipment or experience required.
This guide walks you through exactly what to expect, how to care for your bag, and how to get the best harvest possible.
Step 1: Unpack and Inspect Your Grow Bag
When your package arrives, open it carefully and check your bag. Each All-In-One Grow Bag contains a blend of sterilized hardwood sawdust and fresh grain spawn, sealed and colonizing under ideal conditions.
-
The white growth you’ll see spreading through the bag is called mycelium — that’s the living root network of the mushroom. We want that white mycelium to cover the whole bag.
-
A healthy bag looks white and fluffy (Lion’s Mane and Oyster) or may begin turning brown as it matures (Shiitake and Reishi). If you see these signs that is completely normal and your grow bag is off to a great start.
Don’t worry if your bag isn’t fully colonized yet — remember, we make everything fresh to order, so it continues growing while in transit. We ensure that you get the freshest mycelium possible and we inspect each bag as it colonizes to ensure you get only the best of quality. Simply store your grow bag at room temperature (70–75°F) and allow it to finish colonizing fully before you start fruiting your mushrooms.
Step 2: Choose the Right Spot
Mushrooms thrive in the same environments we do — warm, humid, and comfortable. The ideal location is:
-
Out of direct sunlight (they prefer diffused or ambient light)
-
Room temperature (68–78°F) depending on the species. For more information on your specific species of mushroom you can go to https://cactuscowboysmycology.ca/blogs/learn-about-mushrooms
-
Good airflow, but not windy
Common places people grow mushrooms include a kitchen counter, bathroom shelf, or a clear plastic storage bin. The main objective is to find a clean space with indirect light and adequate air flow.
Step 3: Prepare for Fruiting
Once your bag is fully colonized (the entire surface is covered with white mycelium or its starting to show signs of brown or orange), it’s time to initiate fruiting.
Different mushrooms like slightly different conditions, but here’s the general approach:
-
Lion’s Mane & Pink Oyster: Cut a small “X” in the front of the bag or slit across the top where you see the most growth. You might see tiny mushrooms starting to form inside the bag already. If you do, cut your holes in those areas.
-
Shiitake: Let the block mature until its starting to turn brown, then cut a few small slits for mushrooms to emerge on the sides of the block.
-
Reishi: Open the top of the bag to let fresh air in and allow the distinctive red antlers to grow upward. You can also cut slits in the sides of the block depending on how you want your Reishi antlers to grow
Once opened, mist the exposed area with clean water 1–2 times a day to keep the surface moist — mushrooms love humidity! As your mushrooms grow you can cut back parts of the bag as needed.
Step 4: Watch the Magic Happen
Over the next several days (or weeks, depending on the species), you’ll see small primordia or “pins” begin to form. These tiny baby mushrooms will rapidly grow into full-sized clusters with the right care.
Tips for success:
-
Mist lightly, but often — moisture is key but you don't want to drench your substrate or mushrooms with water.
-
Avoid soaking or puddles inside the bag. Mist bottles work best for maintaining proper moisture levels
-
Provide indirect light (a nearby window works great).
-
Be patient — each species grows at its own pace but with time you will see your beautiful mushrooms emerge!
Here’s roughly when you can expect to see mushrooms forming:
-
Pink Oyster: 5–7 days after cutting the bag
-
Lion’s Mane: 7–14 days
-
Shiitake: 2–3 weeks
-
Reishi: 3-5 weeks
Step 5: Harvest Time!
You’ll know it’s time to harvest when:
-
Lion’s Mane: The surface turns slightly shaggy and soft — before it starts to yellow. It should look like big fluffly pom-poms coming out of your grow bag.
-
Pink Oyster: The edges of the caps flatten out and the gills underneath flair out. A brilliant pink colour should be fully formed on your mushrooms.
-
Shiitake: The caps are open, but not upturned. The caps should be a brown/grey colour with thick stems.
-
Reishi: The color deepens to a shiny red-brown varnish. The antlers should have some decent length to them and should be quite firm.
Use a clean knife or scissors to cut the mushrooms at the base. After harvesting, you can mist the bag again and often get a second or even third flush of mushrooms! Just make sure to properly hydrate your substrate again after your first harvest and you more mushrooms will start to grow eventually after.
Step 6: Cook, Enjoy, and Repeat
Fresh mushrooms you grow yourself taste unbelievably better than anything from the store.
-
Try Lion’s Mane sautéed like crab cakes.
-
Enjoy Shiitake in stir-fries or soups.
-
Pink Oysters are perfect for breakfast scrambles and risottos. Even pasta dishes are complimented very nicely with oyster mushrooms,
-
Brew Reishi into a calming tea or tincture. Or you can dry your mushrooms and grind them up to use in capsules.
Once your bag finishes fruiting, you can even break it up and compost it — your garden plants will thank you.
